As such I was very happy to see that Peter Agre was awarded the Nobel Prize last month for his outstanding work in this field. I also know that the work of Benga's group published in the mid 1980's and onwards clearly shows the identification of the glycosylated water channel protein in erythrocytes with characterisation of some of its properties and with a full appreciation of the implications for water balance. Attribution is often difficult in scientific progress but in this case the publication record speaks for itself.

I completely concur that “Dr Benga’s initial discovery must be properly credited by the Nobel Prize Committee”. On the other hand, the Petition seems to be claiming Dr. Benga’s priority with an accusing tone directed towards Dr. Peter Agre. I strongly disagree with the priority claims and the accusing tone. As a scientist working in the field of gene expression, knowing the approximate molecular weight and even function of a protein (as specified in Dr. Benga’s 1986 papers) is not equivalent to the “discovery” of the protein. To me full discovery requires cloning the protein-coding gene, expressing the protein and proving its function, all of which was accomplished first by Dr. Agre. Nevertheless, I agree that Dr. Benga’s visionary 1986 suggestion of a water-channel protein with a given molecular weight has landmark importance, and should be given SHARED recognition. Having met Dr. Agre, I am convinced that he is an honest, open and good person. Not citing relevant papers is a mistake that we all commit with increasing frequency as the pace of scientific discovery accelerates. I request that the Petition be changed to request shared recognition without claims of priority. In fact, as far as I know him, Dr. Agre would agree to such a petition. Moreover, with such an altered Petition, Dr. Agre could be Dr. Benga’s closest ally on the road to recognition of his visionary 1986 observations. In my opinion, Nobel Prizes are not really about priority, but about shared recognition of carving a path from scientific discovery to the general benefit of mankind. Take for example the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, awarded jointly to Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie and Roger Y. Tsien "for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP". While Shimomura isolated the protein, without Chalfie and Tsien, we would not have experienced the single-cell revolution in today’s science. Questions of priority are meaningless in this context. These scientists together have carved the path that neither could have done alone.
